Elder Care in Palm City, FL – Staying Mentally Active is Important
There are many fun things you can do for or with your senior mother to help her keep an active and alert mind. Keep reading for a few examples and ideas.
The way this works is that most seniors have a telephone programmed with family numbers. Like speed dial on a cell phone, all they have to do is push one button to make a connection with you over their phone. While this is convenient, it does nothing to help her memory. Try having one person’s number for her to read over and memorize each week. After a week is up, have her recite it to you. Then you can add another number the next week and at the end of the week, she should be able to recite both numbers.
This is great for mental exercise, as well as helping your senior to connect with the people she loves. When she’s at another person’s house or at the grocery store, she has those numbers memorized in case she needs them. You can also help your mother remember ingredients to a favorite recipe, or the steps to a hobby she loves doing.
If your mom has a normal route through a store or a path to her mailbox, help her try a different one. Research has shown that being able to take a different direction to the same place helps to exercise memory and mental function.
If your mother isn’t able to leave her house, for a number of reasons, then help her to break a usual routine. This can be anything from drinking tea at a different time of day to reading the newspaper instead of watching the news on TV. Wherever your mother goes or whatever she does on a daily basis, you can try encouraging her to use her non dominant hand for tasks like opening doors or brushing her teeth. She can try wearing a watch or bracelet on the other wrist.
Doing Puzzles and Games
Building a puzzle with friends and family, or enjoying a round of Crazy 8s is the perfect way to sharpen your mother’s mind and socialize at the same time. Her overall well-being will improve with having fun, and her mental skills with increase with each puzzle or game. Here are a few puzzle ideas:
- Unscrambling words
- Doing a traditional puzzle, working up to 10o0 pieces or more
- Doing a crossword puzzle
- Solving riddles
- Even try playing a puzzle video game!
Your mother may need more help with day to day things as she is training her mind. A professional caregiver can be just what is needed to help with cooking or specific disabilities. When you are ready to hire home care for the elderly, it’s a great idea in combination with activities to sharpen the mind. Her caregiver can also do mental exercises with her.
